The winner of the 2019 Startup Canada Social Enterprise Award is Nunuvut-based Arctic Fresh, an online retail store, offering customers in thirteen isolated Northern communities a wide range of affordable products from fresh and nutritious produce to household items. Arctic Fresh Inc. was founded in 2015 by co-founders Merlyn Recinos and Rhoda Angutimarik. Kick-started with a crowdfunding campaign, this organization is a response to the growing, exorbitant cost of food that Northerners experience every day. Arctic Fresh supports Inuit culture, language, and the local community by investing in people and collaborating with local partners. Arctic Fresh is a socially-driven enterprise committed to reducing food scarcity and improving the diets and lives of Canadians in the remote North.
